December 1 Ice Report: Hardwater Is Here!
Cold air and fresh snow have teamed up to jump-start the ice season. Area lakes have skimmed over nicely, and the bigger water isn’t far behind. Lake Poygan appears to have a sheet of ice across the entire lake, and with more cold temps in the forecast this week, don’t be surprised to see folks fishing by the weekend—especially in protected bays and out on Poygan.
A Welcome Start to the 2025–2026 Season
After waiting through fall’s ups and downs, this stretch of cold is exactly what we needed. Shorelines and back bays were first to lock, and each night is adding thickness and consistency. We’ll keep watching the main-lake ice, pressure cracks, and access points as things firm up.
Big Weekend: Shows & Deals
Two great events are on tap:
-
St. Paul Ice Fishing Show – tons of gear, seminars, and early-season specials.
-
Kurt’s Island Sports Ice Fishing Extravaganza (Minocqua, WI) – I’ll be up at Kurt’s, cooking fish and chicken wings so you can sample the Catch & Cook breadings and seasonings. Come say hi—there will be some excellent deals at both spots.
And mark your calendar: Oshkosh next weekend!
Early-Ice Safety First
If you’re lucky enough to step on the hardwater this week, please use every safety precaution:
-
Spud bar — check as you go
-
Throwable cushion + rope
-
Buddy system — never fish first ice alone
-
Ice picks — worn and accessible
-
Floatation suit or life jacket
-
Common sense — avoid current, narrows, and unknown ice
Remember: no fish is worth a bad decision. Check often, turn back if conditions change, and share what you learn with others.
See You Out There
Good luck, be safe, and share your stories and photos with us! We’ll see you at the shows this weekend—and in Oshkosh next weekend.
