Cold front perch fishing on lake winnebago can be awesome! Today was proof of that. Not huge fish but nice 8.5-10" perch.

Ice on the lakes vary so much around the Fox Valley. Lake Poygan has the best ice around with an average of 8-12 inches in the main lake and towards the West end. Closer to Lake Winneconne, the mouth of the river and over by Indain Point, lesser amounts in the 6-9" range are still out there. Remember that no ice is 100% safe. We have been going off the county landing without any issues and a lot of guys have been using Herbst's landing to drive off from as well. The bite has been very good but has been very timed base. For the past week the best bite has been from noon to 2 pm and again just at dark. Pimples, slender spoons or jiggin raps are all working very well. Some days it pays to have some minnows along even though its pretty much against everything i stand for when it comes to catching walleyes and whitebass with live bait...
Out on Lake Winnebago the ice in the bays continues to thicken but for whatever reason the main lake just doesn't want to lock up. As seen in the MODIS imagery from NOAA there are still some bad spots up on the north end of the lake and as of yesterday, January 19, a 200-300 yard crack opened up along the west shore from Oshkosh to Menasha. It re-froze last night and today Jan. 20 there was about 2" of new ice that will be covered by snow not allowing anyone to see where the old thicker ice and new thin ice meets. Hopefully we get another cold spell to thicken that area up otherwise the guys on the west shore are going to have a hard time getting out to the lake this winter. Over on the East shore and south past the mouth of the river, ice is in a lot better condition. It is very flat and varies in thickness from 6-12" with the best ice being over in the Brothertown and Calumetteville area. Perch fishing is on fire right now in just about any bay you go to. The better fish I have been finding have been more on the south end of the lake near Black Wolf and Fond du lac. No walleyes as of yet but a few whitebass have been caught in the deeper water just outside the bays.
If you're looking for an added piece of mind while out on the lakes this winter, take a look at the Striker Ice Suits. They are very economically priced and the best part about them is they will keep you afloat for 2 hours or more. They are lightweight, very comfortable and extremely warm. They were built for the ice fisherman and with a year like this I know if I go in, I have a way better chance of coming out with a flotation suit than wearing a bulky outfit that will probably sink me. www.strikerbrands.com
