The latest rain soaks the lakes - 4-8" of water on the ice....Floating portable ice shanties....need i say more. Keep your vehicles off until things firm back up.
With the recent rain and wind, Lake Winnebago has become two separate lakes. One on top of the ice and one below the ice. USE EXTREME CAUTION THE NEXT FEW DAYS WHILE HEADING OUT! When we hit the ice, we had about a quarter inch of water on top of the ice. When we left a few hours later, there was 4-6" of water and the ice was very soft. Some spots had water gushing down the hole like a toilet flushing, others had water bubling up as the ice was sinking. Either way, it was wet! I would not drive a vehicle anywhere out there until things firm up. the ice got too soft with all this water and wind.
Up until this afternoon, fishing had really picked up this week with good numbers of perch, a few crappies, some walleyes and the mighty whity bass. Small jigging rapalas tipped with minnow heads or spikes being jigged about 2-4 feet off bottom was the ticket for everything. Again there are way more fish swimming by than are being caught. Once these fish start to eat on a regular basis, the fishing will be AWESOME! Until then all we can do is go out and try.
Party on Poygan is this upcoming weekend at Critters. Be sure to get your fishing tickets before Saturday! We will have updated ice conditions mid week and a report on what is going on out there. More and more walleyes are starting to feed back near Indian Point and towards the mouth of the river. Perch are starting to pick up on the West end out in front of Captains and the bluegills, crappies and perch have been excellent one day and poor the next back near Kiesows and the mouth of the Rat River. We need to get some snow cover on the ice to quiet the traffic down.
Please call the shop for the latest conditions and reports. 920-582-0471.
See you all at the PARTY!
